Recession-Proof Jobs - What Are They?

There are those who say the U.S. is heading into a full-blown recession.  So what do you, the new-career seeker, do?  Get trained in a recession-proof job!

What exactly are recession-proof jobs?  Well, they're jobs that, instead of decrease in demand during a recession, actually increase in demand.  What are some of those job areas that will still be hiring once a recession hits?

Education

The demand for skilled teachers is rising.  Why?  Well, for one thing, more and more older teachers are retiring.  And, then there's the increase in school enrollment due to the current baby boom.

But what if you don't want to become a teacher?  Then think of the "go-along" jobs, those areas that "go along" with education, such as administrators, text-book suppliers, and creators and sellers of other learning materials.

Health Care

A recession doesn't lessen the need for healthcare.  Health services providers are always searching for qualified medical personnel.  That doesn't just mean doctors and nurses, but other health professionals as well:  physical therapists, medical assistants, medical coders, phlebotomists, home health aides, etc.  Many of these professions do require certification, which can be gained by taking degree and certification courses as community colleges, or private colleges.  Some certification programs are offered through "community services education" departments at community colleges, which mean you don't have to go through a longer degree program in order to gain employment.

Green Jobs

The bad news is that environment is going through a rough time (global warming, pollution, etc.).  The good news is that there is going to be a demand for qualified workers in "green collar jobs."

What are green collar jobs?  Green collar Jobs are those job created by companies and organizations to improve the environment, whether it be manufacturing wind turbines or installing solar panels.  These types of jobs include:

  • Manufacturing products from recycled materials
  • Home weatherization
  • Construction on "green" buildings
  • Home remodeling with green materials
  • Public transit jobs
  • Hauling away materials for reuse
  • Hazardous materials cleanup
  • Installation of solar panels
  • Landscaping to cut down on water use

Security

Again, the bad news is the world is less secure than it used to be, with cyber crimes, identity theft, and the threat of terrorism on the rise.  Which means there will always be a need for people working in security, whether that be airport security, security at department stores, employee screening, or workers to combat cyber crimes.
